Pt. Cortley checked for civilians but they'd already run away. We quickly spotted an unnatural-style monster mostly composed of legs, about 3m across. We attacked with the 28mmHD rounds and explosive rounds to no apparent effect, and it retaliated by liquefying the ground before advancing on us. At this point we called for backup. We slowed it down enough with grenades and the car's gun to retreat until Squad 1 arrived, but none of our efforts actually managed to damage it. It was unable to counter the flamethrower they had, and the remains vanished after a few minutes of burning. | | HEXES | Some sort of ability to make things soft and fluid, possibly a stronger version of Weakening. Some of the bullets that hit it seemed to turn into puffs of smoke, probably the same hex it used on the road, and it disabled most of the grenades the same way. Touch or near-touch range, but able to extend through solid objects to at least 15m. | | COMMENTS | We keep having these close run-ins with kinetic-immune demons. It wasn't too bad this time, but if we just had some proper incendiary weapons in the standard loadout we would've been at way less risk and could have not called in a second squad. | | REPORT BY | Mack Flores | | OFFICER COMMENTS | Incendiary weapons are in short supply. Reports from Wyegrove have been similar. We'll have to prioritise scaling up production. Report formatted incorrectly, someone remind him how it works. What's "checked for civilians"? That sounds inadequate. | | RECEIVING OFFICER | Adalli Nafaro | ==== The LCC ==== **“The pattern of alliances which emerged after 3914 were the inevitable consequence of patterns of ideological agreement and conflict.” Evaluate critically with reference to TWO of the following: geography, the policies of the saints and angels, the foreign policies of authoritarian states, domestic political forces, and Adalli Nafaro.** The period after 3914 was a time of great historical change. The death of God left humans dependent on themselves, while also depriving the Commission of both their main source of intelligence and the main source of their Conviction and loyalty. Picture should be more nuanced. Remember that the Commission did survive in the form of democratic restorationist parties, and indeed in some places (i.e. New Duttom & co) as an authoritarian regime. Also, “conviction” should not be capitalised. There was great ideological divergence between democratic and authoritarian states, but there were also other lines of divergence, e.g. pious states against impious and heretic states. The democratic or non-democratic divide only became such a central features of the system of alliances due to Adalli Nafaro’s work on the LCC Metacouncil. His system of Horizontal Alliances between democratic states on both sides of the rift stabilised this pattern at a time when it was mainly assumed that geography would win and cause a Vertical Alliance system where the pious states in the West would ally with each other and the impious states in the East would do the same with each other. This is a good, clear thesis statement. However, this should recognise some of the wider controversy. It may be true that some (who?) expected a Vertical Alliance system, but that doesn’t mean it was ever likely! In particular, consider that many of the states in the West were not very pious and that their populations lacked an appetite for religious conflict. I notice you’re citing Arrese Cardona’s New Diplomatic History a lot. I think you need to engage more with the scholarly controversy regarding Nafaro, both as a character and as a politician. This need becomes acutely visible later in the essay. Start with Özbey’s “Was he for real? Revisiting the Nafaro Myth in post-3914 international politics”. ---- ==== EMBATTLED NAFARO VOWS TO FIGHT ON ==== Metacouncillor Adalli Nafaro, until last year Chair of the Metacouncil, has vowed to continue in his role amid a compound storm of controversy. In an explosive speech to supporters last night in Bexgate’s Liberty Square, Nafaro said that he was willing to continue his work to secure the LCC against its “three threats”: neo-Commissionism, demons, and authoritarianism abroad. Nafaro has come under pressure recently, even from erstwhile political allies, following the publication of the Bexgate Papers, Commission files once thought lost. The most damaging revelation was that Nafaro (erstwhile Agent Angler Q-3) had aided the Commission in targeting his fellow parishioners in the church of St. Renagi’s to a greater degree than previously believed. Nafaro has remained publicly committed to his established line on his days of collaboration between his dismissal as an agent rank Q-4 and the death of God, maintaining that the measures which he took were necessary to win the trust of the Commission and, ultimately, bring about their downfall, although they remain regrettable. Other sources close to him have spoken in stronger terms, alleging that the files are at least partially fabricated. One has gone so far as to allege that the release of the files is a ploy by the Wicked Witch of the East to discredit a leading voice for democracy. Pro-Nafaro sources have also claimed that he has information pertaining to the 3914 bombing of the Bexgate Commission HQ which would vindicate him to his critics. Nafaro has been one of the big beasts of LCC politics since its inception. From his days as one of the first advocates for such a league of democracies, to his role as a mediator between larger districts in its founding negotiations, to his service as a leading architect of its diplomatic and security policy, Nafaro has exercised a political influence which belies the size of his own home district, the small city-state of Bexgate. However, even many of his supporters have taken to whispering that now may be the moment for the Grand Old Man to gracefully retire, his legacy secure. ==== Footnote ==== Adalli Nafaro removed himself from the public eye amid much controversy. Reliable sources suggest that he may now be living somewhere amid the Fens in Bexgate, although given his skillset it would be ill-advised to seek him out when he clearly does not wish to be disturbed. Even if we're all dying to read his autobiography. {{tag>writeupeternity gm_dahria gm_paddy gm_andrew complete}}
